Matalascañas - or Playa de Matalascañas (beach of ~) - is a Spanish resort on the Atlantic . The place is also often represented as Torre de la Higuera . It belongs to the municipality of Almonte .
Matalascañas was built in the 1970s as an urbanization right next to the Coto de Doñana National Park in the province of Huelva . In the beginning it served the Spaniards - mostly from Seville - only as a summer vacation home, but now there are offers all year round. Golfers in particular will find one of the few "environmentally friendly golf courses" in Spain right next to the national park.
Whitsun is the main season in Matalascañas - in addition to the summer months - because then over a million pilgrims come to the nearby El Rocío for pilgrimages .
