The location of Condado de Huelva within Andalusia

Condado de Huelva is a Spanish wine region .

The Denominación de Origen , which only applies to white wines, is located in the province of Huelva on the Atlantic coast in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia , near the Portuguese border. The vineyards cover around 5,468 hectares of vineyards (as of 2002), which are cultivated by 2,887 winemakers and cover the communities of Almonte , Bollullos Par del Condado , Beas , Bonares , Chucena , Gibraleón , Hinojos , La Palma del Condado , Lucena del Puerto , Manzanilla , Moguer , Niebla , Palos de la Frontera , Rociana del Condado , San Juan del Puerto , Trigueros , Villalba del Alcor and Villarrasa . The area has more than halved in the last 15 years. This tendency can be explained by the mostly poor quality of the wines.

The average 114,000 hectoliters of wine are marketed by 19 bodegas and 178 independent winemakers. The Vinicola del Condado cooperative alone, with over 1000 affiliated members, markets almost 45% of the region's volume. The vineyards are 25 meters above sea level. NN just above sea level. There is sufficient rainfall between 500–650 mm / year. The annual average temperature is a high 17-18 ° C; the very mild climate is Mediterranean but also influenced by the Atlantic.

With almost 86% of the total area, the autochthonous white grape variety Zalema dominates . Other white varieties are Palomino (the sherry grape), Garrido Fino , Moscatel de Alejandria , Colombard , Listán de Huelva and Pedro Ximénez .

In the 16th century the area was the main supplier of wine to the newly discovered South American colonies. In the 17th century, the wine was then delivered in large quantities for the production of sherry to the neighboring, southeast lying Jerez. This practice is no longer allowed due to strict rules of origin. Therefore, wines similar to the sherry types Fino and Oloroso, called Condado Palido and Condado Viejo, are produced today in a Solera process. Other products are the Vino Joven , the region's young wines that are pleasant and easy to drink. The cultivation of red varieties is in the experimental stage. Many varieties are being experimented with, for example the Monastrell .

The regulatory authority for monitoring the regulations of the DO is the Consejo Regulador de la DO CONDADO DE HUELVA
