history

The Arab Mogauar or Moquer was conquered by the Santiagoorden around 1240 and initially placed under its jurisdiction. Later the place was dependent on Niebla .

In the 14th century it developed into a small town. The castle from the Almohad period was expanded and the Santa Clara monastery was built. At the end of the 15th century, the “La Niña” caravel was launched here and some of the city's residents took part in Columbus ' voyages of discovery.

In 1642 Moguer received city rights from Philip IV .

Most of the houses were destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Only parts of the castle and the Santa Clara monastery remained.

In the 19th century Moguer lost the competition for the title of provincial capital.

The poet Juan Ramón Jiménez , who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956 , was born here on December 24, 1881 . His best known work is " Platero and I ".

In the 20th century, viticulture suffered an economic decline due to a phylloxera plague. Only in the 1970s did the economic situation stabilize again after strawberry plantations were established. Today the city is the main producer of strawberries in Spain.

In 1993 Pope John Paul II also visited the city of Moguer as part of his trip to Spain.
