history
The Phoenician origin of the name ( carteia = the city) and some archaeological finds in the area suggest an early settlement. But a permanent settlement was only found in the 15th century, when the Marquis of Gibraleón set up a ferry service there over the Piedras River and had the city founded to secure it.
Seven years later, the Zúñiga Castle began, which is now west of the old town. In the same century, a single-nave Mudéjar- style church was built, and today's San Pedro church was later built in its place.
