Isla Cristina is a Spanish city ​​in the province of Huelva in the autonomous region of Andalusia . On January 1, 2019, 21,264 residents lived there. The urban area has an area of ​​49.36 km² and a population density of 431 inhabitants / km². The city is three meters above sea level and 56 km from the provincial capital Huelva .

history

The place was founded by Catalan fishermen in 1756, a year after the Lisbon earthquake , and was initially called La Higuerita. In 1802 it became an independent parish and in 1834 it was renamed Isla Cristina (in honor of the Spanish queen). Today it is the third largest city in the Huelva province.

Isla Cristina is heavily influenced by fishing . In summer, however, the population triples when (mainly) Spanish tourists spend their holidays here. International tourism can be found 8 km east of the city on Islantilla Beach, where a tourist center has been established.
