Aroche is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) with 3,073 inhabitants (as of 2019) in the northwest of the southern Spanish province of Huelva in the autonomous community of Andalusia .

location

The place Aroche is on a ridge surrounded by brooks (arroyos) in the western part of the Sierra Morena near the border with Portugal and a good 130 km (driving distance) north of the port city of Huelva at an altitude of approx. 380 to 450 m above sea level. d. The climate in winter is temperate, in summer it is warm to hot; the low amounts of precipitation (approx. 585 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Archaeological remains from the Neolithic Age have been discovered in the municipality . In Roman times , the place, which was then called Turóbriga , later Arucci and even had a small amphitheater , had the right to mint its own coins. In the course of the reconquest ( reconquista ) of the former Christian areas in the south of the Iberian Peninsula from the hands of the Moors , the place near the historically disputed border with Portugal was taken around 1230 by the troops of the Portuguese King Sancho II (r. 1223–1247 / 8), but fell to Castile at the end of the century under Sancho IV .

  • The castle (castillo) , built by the Almohads around 1200 on the site of the Roman amphitheater, was rebuilt and expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. Large parts of the courtyard have been occupied by a bullring since the early 19th century .
  • The place was from a three-sided city wall from the 14th / 15th. Century, the remains of which are still visible.

  • Not far from the church is a rosary museum with over 2000 exhibits from all over the world.
  • The Museo arqueológico is located in three rooms of the former Hieronymites' convent. The first two rooms show finds from the Roman era of the place; the third room presents finds from prehistory to early modern times.

  • The construction of the Ermita de San Mamés (sometimes also known as San Pedro de la Zarza ) , located about 5 km north of the town on the Río Chanza near the ancient city of Turóbriga , dates back to the time of Christian repopulation ( repoblación ) in the 13th and 14th . Century back; it is one of the oldest (preserved) churches in Andalusia. On the inner walls of the three-aisled church, which is covered by a wooden roof, there are frescoes from the 15th century. During a plague epidemic in the 17th century, the building was used as a hospital.
