occupation

Alexander the Great is a monumental film by Robert Rossen from 1956 that depicts the life of the Macedonian king of the same name . It was the only better-known film adaptation of the Alexander story before Oliver Stones Alexander (2004).

action

In epic length, the film tells the well-known life story of the Macedonian king Alexander the great , from the unification of the Greek tribes to his fight and victory over the empire of the Persian great king Darius .

reception

The film tells Alexander's life in a relatively conventional way. According to many critics, Richard Burton's impressive play in the title role is particularly noteworthy, although various critics consider that he was unsuitably equipped with a blonde wig.

Others

  • Actually, Peter Wyngarde (known from the TV series " Department S " and " Jason King ") was supposed to play the title role first. However, he then only received the smaller role of Pausanias.

Reviews

  • Cinema magazine Cinema :
Im Schweinsgalopp, the sandal epic permeated with juicy pathos leads through the eventful life of Alexander. Historians may discover inconsistencies here and there. But Burton's play is powerful, the equipment splendid, and the battle scenes are powerful. "

"The detailed, realistic film beneficially dispenses with the heroic pathos and adheres closely to the military career of the title hero; large cast in an epic work. " (Rating: 2½ stars = above average)

To put it simply: Alexander the Great is a colossal bore. ('Put simply, Alexander the Great is a colossal bore.')

Hollywood historical film shot with enormous effort in Cinemascope (…). A kind of leading article for future world conquerors.
