Peter Wyngarde (1976)

Peter Wyngarde (* 23. August 1927 in Marseille , Bouches-du-Rhône , France as Cyril Gold Bert ; † 15. January 2018 in London ) was a British actor .

Life

Goldbert was the son of a British diplomat and a French mother. He grew up in England and Switzerland, among other places, and was imprisoned by the Japanese in a concentration camp in Shanghai in 1941 . Wyngarde began his acting career in 1947 with a stage performance of Noël Cowards Present Laughter . Initially, he appeared in some television films produced by the BBC . In 1956 he played alongside Frederic March and Richard Burton in the historical film Alexander the Great , two years later he played the pirate Long John Silver in a miniseries based on the novel Treasure Island . In the following decade, he received various film roles and had guest appearances on some of the most successful British series of the time.

1969 his breakthrough came with his role as "Jason King" in the British crime series Department S . This developed into a great success. And although it actually had three main actors, the sympathies of the audience were exclusively for Wyngarde. With his penchant for flashy clothes and with his lush mustache, he became the dazzling character of the series, which was then discontinued after 28 episodes in favor of the spin-off Jason King , which was ultimately only tailored to Wyngarde . At the height of his success, he took 1970 LP Peter Wyngarde on that later under the title When Sex Leers Its Inquisitive Head as CD was re-released.

Wyngarde could not build on the success of these two series later. After he was caught homosexual with a man in the men's room at an English bus station in 1975 and was subsequently convicted of causing public nuisance, his career in Britain was all but over. After that he appeared mostly under pseudonyms in smaller theaters. In 1980 he had another role in a major feature film production, but in Flash Gordon he acted under a metal skull mask. Four years later he starred in several episodes of the science fiction series Doctor Who , after which he largely withdrew from the public. His German dubbing voice was among others Jürgen Thormann .

Wyngarde died on January 15, 2018 at the age of 90 in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.
