occupation

Catlow is a British western comedy directed by Sam Wanamaker from 1971. The film, which received an ambivalent response from the critics, had its German premiere on March 23, 1972.

action

After the end of the American Civil War, the good-natured crook Catlow is looking for a gold treasure worth two million dollars. Finding it makes it difficult for him to find Marshall Ben Cowan, who is charged with arresting Catlow for stealing cattle. The two, who fought side by side in the Civil War, play a game of cat and mouse, but Catlow can always escape. Finally he and his gang manage to get the gold treasure into their possession. But now it's not only Cowan, but also the previous owners of the treasure, a group of Mexican soldiers, the unscrupulous bounty hunter Miller and an Indian tribe targeting Catlow.

criticism

"Fun and exciting, worth seeing especially because of Daliah Lavi."

- Joe Hembus : Das Western-Lexikon, Munich 1997, p. 95.

“Catlow seems to want to tell us something - about friendship or the importance of possessions or discovering happiness - because that seems to be the basis of the more exciting moments. But then the film does something else and apparently it doesn't know about the potential of its ideas. "

- Freely adapted from Roger Greenspun , in: New York Times , October 21, 1971.

"Although the story gets boggled over and over again, it even comes to a standstill, the film offers mostly cheerful and exciting entertainment."

background

The script uses and parodies various motifs from well-known western classics such as the Billy the Kid films and Sergio Leone's Two Glorious Scoundrels .

For Yul Brynner, the protagonist of John Sturge's The Magnificent Seven , it was the last western of his career.

Leonard Nimoy , known for his role as Spock ( Star Trek ), played one of his few roles outside of the science fiction genre.

For Daliah Lavi it was the last feature film of her acting career. She then became known as a singer.
