L'Amour dropped out of school in 1923 and earned a living doing odd jobs until 1942, during which time he worked in the United States and Asia , as well as on the high seas. He published his first poetry in the 1930s and his first short story in 1939. From 1946 he wrote more and more stories that were settled in the western genre. Works

Most of Louis L'Amour's novels were translated into German for the paperback book publishers' western series (Heyne, Bastei Lübbe, Goldmann). Some books have been published several times under different titles. The trend of the times is also reflected in the choice of the book title. People appear more frequently in some novels, and the author later planned to revise his family saga about the British Sackett family. But he never got around to that.
