Africa Express is an Italian - German adventure - comedy from 1976 with Giuliano Gemma , and Ursula Andress in the lead roles. Directed by Michele Lupo , who is best known as a director of Bud Spencer films .

action

John Baxter lives in Africa, where he drives mail in an old truck and takes care of supplying the population with everyday goods. He wants to make enough money with it to one day be able to take over a gas station in Detroit. Baxter is accompanied by his pet, the chimpanzee Biba . Since he doesn't trust banks, he entrusts his money to the priest Gasparetto , who runs a mission station in the area.

One day he meets a young woman who pretends to be a nun, Sister Magdalena , but who is actually Madeleine Cooper and is looking for a former double agent who has fled to Africa and lives there under the false name of Robert Preston . Baxter helps her because, on the one hand, he is in love with her and, on the other hand, he can't stand Preston himself. The two of them receive further support from Biba, Gasparetto and a native tribe who are one of Baxter's clients. Together they can arrest Preston.

Madeleine gives Baxter a job with the secret service, which Baxter refuses. He'd rather live a calmer, safer life, even though that means breaking up with Madeleine. Baxter returns to Gasparetto but finds that the priest who thought he was dead used the money to build a hospital.

German dubbed version

There is a German dubbed version of the film, in which Arnold Marquis is involved as the spokesman for Jack Palance. In the German version, Gasparetto becomes the Bavarian priest Kaspar.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described Africa Express as a naive adventure film with a stupid description of Christian missionary work. According to Cinema magazine , it is a poor copy of American models such as the African Queen and A Feast for the Vultures .

continuation

A sequel was released in 1977 under the title Safari Express , also with Gemma and Andress in the leading roles and Maffioli as Gasparetto.
