Otto Bechtold

Otto Bechtold (born April 20, 1928 in Rinschheim ; † January 31, 2019 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Freiburg from 1988 to 2003 .

Life

After studying philosophy and theology, Otto Bechtold was ordained a priest in 1952 and was then initially chaplain in Mannheim and Lörrach . In 1958 he became a church-political phenomenon in the young Archdiocese of Freiburg (1827-1860) with the work The Call for Synods. A contribution to the relationship between state and church in the Grand Duchy of Baden and the history of the religious enlightenment in southern Germany , PhD at the University of Freiburg. From 1958 he worked as a secretary in the Archbishop's Ordinariate Freiburg , whose Ordinariate Council he became in 1960.

He was accepted into the Freiburg cathedral chapter in 1969 and dean of the cathedral in 1990 . Archbishop Oskar Saier appointed Bechtold Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Freiburg in 1988. During the sedis vacancy in July 2002, he was permanent representative of the diocesan administrator Paul Wehrle . The new Archbishop Robert Zollitsch also made Bechtold his vicar general from July to October 2003. His successor in 2003 was Fridolin Keck . From 1988 to 2003 he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the School Foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .
