Once upon a time ... man ( French Il était une fois ... l'Homme ) is a French cartoon series that was created in 1978 and deals with the history of mankind . It was invented by the French director and producer Albert Barillé . Its aim was to entertain and educate children in equal measure, and it was the start of a series of series entitled Once Upon a Time ... Age Rating: FSK 0

content

The main character is “Maestro” - a bearded, wise old man who always tells the appropriate stories in the background, but is often also part of the story. Five billion years before our time, Maestro shows the creation of the earth and explains the origin of life, dinosaurs , Neanderthals and humans. The series repeatedly addresses hypotheses that were current at the time the series was created, but are now partly outdated. Later on, it deals with important epochs, events and people in history, but not in full. The last episode is set in the future and people will have to emigrate to space after destroying the earth through mass consumption and wars.

characters

The series tells the story of humanity from the perspective of a small group of people. The members always appear as typical representatives of the current era. Sometimes they also take on the role of a famous person from the story, provided that this fits their character.

• Maestro - The wise old man. Maestro often portrays an inventor, philosopher or advisor and thus represents progress in every era. His distinguishing feature is a long white beard that envelops his entire body and also serves to store various objects. In the German version of the series, his voice is also that of the narrator.
• Adam - the good one. Adam often plays the common man. He is brave and has a good character.
• Eva - The loving mother and / or companion. She is blonde and a strong woman - often Adam's wife.
• Jumbo - the strong one. Jumbo is Adam's best friend and is always there when he is confronted with physical violence. He has red hair and the stature and strength of a bear.
• Klotz - The brutal with the long red nose. He is not particularly clever, but very irascible, and almost always refers to the law of the strongest, which means that he is the evil counterpart to the maestro presenting progress. He only gives in to Jumbo very quickly.
• The disgust - The little redhead is insidious and the loyal henchman of Klotz. Due to his own physical weakness and cowardice, he likes to hide behind Klotz or act on his behalf in order to feel strong.
• Memory - the clock. It shows the current year and occasionally has to prevent the maestro from making an invention or discovery ahead of time. Depending on the age, she wears appropriate traditional costumes such as laurels or Viking helmets.

Production and publication

The series was produced by the French studio Procidis under the direction of Albert Barillé in collaboration with France Régions FR3 , Société Radio Canada , RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana , the Swiss radio and television company SRG , Radiodifusion-Télévision Belge RTBF , Belgische Ratio en Televisie BRT , KRO Holland , Norsk Rikskringkasting NRK , Sveriges Radio AB SR, Televisión Española RTVE , Access Alberta and Tatsunoko Productions . The music was composed by Michel Legrand . In the music of the opening credits, the French and German film versions differ. In the original version you can hear the toccata and fugue in D minor BWV 565 , while in the German version the beginning of the song A Thousand Years Are One Day by Udo Jürgens can be heard. Episode 13 (The Hundred Years War) was only published in Germany in a version shortened to 13 minutes. The programs were broadcast on the following channels; the series was released entirely in German on DVD. In 2014 the series was released on Blu-ray, completely digitally restored .

This series and its successor series were dubbed in almost all languages.
