Once upon a time ... life ( French Il était une fois ... la Vie ) is a French animated series that was created in 1986 and is one of a series of series entitled Once Upon a Time .
content
The series explains the processes in the human body. The protagonists are, on the one hand, young people who experience various life processes, such as eating, metabolism and illness, and, on the other hand, anthropomorphic elements of the microscopic world such as blood cells, messenger substances or nerve impulses that are on their way through the body. To do this, they use motorcycle or spaceship-like vehicles and engage in firefights with intruders (bacteria, viruses).

Criticism of the German dubbed version
In the third episode, in the German version, one of the staphylococci calls out "Oy vey gevalt" - a Yiddish expression of horror - just before they are gassed by the blue Wüterich (a T-lymphocyte). The French original contains no allusion to the Third Reich . In April 2020, journalist Stefan Niggemeier dedicated an article to this scene in the online magazine Übermedien , in which he described the German dubbing as deeply anti-Semitic . He turned to Studio Hamburg Enterprises , a subsidiary of NDR , which now sells the series. According to Niggemeier, the company announced that it would check whether this passage could be removed from the German synchronization, at least on digital distribution platforms. A text in the trivia section of the sales company's website has also been removed. It pointed out the difference between the original and the German version, supplemented by the specification that this was “an allusion to the crimes in the Third Reich”. The scope of the anti-Semitic representation was not recognized when designing the website. In the meantime, the video-on-demand provider Netflix has completely removed the German soundtrack from this episode until a new version has been created in which the relevant section is replaced by the original French sound.
