The last sniper is a 1976 Late West based on a Glendon Swarthout novel . Directed by Don Siegel . It was the last film made by the legendary actor John Wayne . The film was sold in Germany under the original title The Shootist , often connected with Der (last) Sniper as The Shootist - The Last Sniper or also as The Shootist .

action

In January 1901, news of the death of the British Queen Victoria reached Carson City . There the famous sniper JB Books is looking for the doctor Dr. Hostetler on. Hostetler has to tell the old book about the diagnosis of cancer . The doctor prescribes laudanum and advises Books to seek a quick, dignified death instead of the expected infirmity. Books moves into the pension of the widow Bond Rogers, with whom he soon befriends after initial arguments. The guest's reputation leads to problems, however, as there are a few people living in the city who still have an unfinished business with Books or want to kill him out of a desire for recognition. Books shoots some nocturnal intruders of this type. When the laudanum comes to an end, on his birthday, Books faces his enemies in a saloon for the final honorable showdown . The old reflexes nearly ruin Books' plan. But finally he succeeds in a worthy death in his boots.
