action

The plot is set in the Civil War (1861-65): John McBurney, corporal of the United States Army , is badly wounded in the middle of enemy territory. The twelve-year-old Amelia finds him and takes him to a girls' boarding school . The boarding women take care of him without informing the soldiers of the Confederate States Army that they are harboring an enemy soldier. 17-year-old Carol falls for McBurney's charm and invites him to go to her room that night. When Carol notices that McBurney has also confessed his love to the older Edwina, she becomes jealous and ties a blue cloth to the gate - as a sign that a soldier of the Union Army is on the boarding school premises. McBurney then sets up a patrol . Boarding school director, Martha Farnsworth, claims McBurney is her Texas cousin, and the soldiers leave without having achieved anything.

Martha proposes to McBurney to stay permanently in order to manage the adjacent farm and thus take the place of her missing brother. McBurney kisses her, but then goes into Carol's room and sleeps with her. Edwina hears noises from the room and finds McBurney in Carol's bed. In her anger, she throws McBurney down the stairs, who remains lying unconscious. Martha found a broken leg and was forced to amputate it. The next morning, McBurney wakes up to learn that he only has one leg left. He becomes enraged and accuses Martha of only having amputated his leg because he has not slept with her. Carol protests that she still loves him and unlocks the door for him. McBurney seizes a pistol and threatens the boarding school director and her students. Should Martha let the soldiers know about him, he would expose her.

Martha asks Amelia to look for poisonous mushrooms for dinner. Over dinner, McBurney apologizes to Martha and reveals his decision to go away with Edwina and marry her. Unsuspecting, he eats the mushrooms and passes them on to Edwina, who is also not privy to it. When she is about to eat the mushrooms too, Martha is forced to break up the plot. McBurney stumbles and collapses dead. In the last shot, Martha and her students prepare the funeral.

The 61 [-] year-old Hollywood veteran [...] finally presents a personal film again with 'The Beguiled'. ”It continues:“ A catalog of wild decadence, the seal with obvious fun in black humor and drastic sexual symbolism as brilliantly staged horror show presented. "
