The seduced (Original title: The Beguiled ) is an American film drama from 2017 . It is based on the novel A Painted Devil by Thomas P. Cullinan. The script was written and directed by the American director Sofia Coppola . The film celebrated its world premiere on May 24, 2017 at the Cannes International Film Festival , where Coppola was awarded the prize for best director for her work . It is a production by American Zoetrope in collaboration with FR Productions and was released in US cinemas on June 30, 2017 with distribution from Focus Features and in German cinemas on distribution from Universal Pictures International on June 29, 2017 .

Nicole Kidman , Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning as well as Colin Farrell as John McBurney can be seen in the leading roles . The film is also a remake of the 1971 released movie Betrayed by Don Siegel with Clint Eastwood in the title role.

action

The story of the film is set in Virginia during the American Civil War in 1864 : the eleven-year-old Amy, a student at a boarding school for girls , discovers the badly wounded soldier John McBurney from the warring northern states while picking mushrooms in the forest near her school . He asks her to help him, she supports him on the way to school and asks the headmistress Martha Farnsworth for help. Martha Farnsworth and the teacher Edwina Morrow take care of him and hide him in the school from the enemy soldiers.

As he recovers from his injury, the women and girls vie for his attention. They give him presents, wear jewelry and prepare a sumptuous feast for him. McBurney is extremely friendly to everyone, especially Miss Morrow and Miss Farnsworth. When he is back on his feet, he makes himself useful as a gardener. Apparently he's scared of going back to war. When Miss Farnsworth suggests he is healthy enough to drop out of school, he tries to convince her to keep him as a gardener. He also confesses to Miss Morrow that he fell in love with her.

One evening he tells Miss Morrow to wait for him in her room. But when he does not appear and she hears strange noises from the room opposite, she finds him there in bed with Alicia, the oldest student. When McBurney tries to calm her down, she pushes him down the stairs, breaking his already injured leg. Miss Farnsworth then has the leg amputated without waiting for the unconscious McBurney's consent, as - as she says - gangrene could break out. When he wakes up the next day and realizes that he has lost his leg, he is beside himself with anger and despair. He accuses the women, and especially Miss Farnsworth, of punishing him for the mess he wreaked at the school. He breaks out of the room he was locked in, steals a pistol, threatens the women with it and disappears angrily. Later, Miss Morrow, who was critical of the amputation of the leg, goes to him in the room, where she offers herself to him to show him that he can still live like a man.

The events in the house now cause Miss Farnsworth to find a solution to the current situation. One of the schoolgirls suggests killing McBurney by making dinner for him with poisonous mushrooms. Amy is sent out to collect poison mushrooms. During dinner, Miss Morrow, who was not informed of the plan, is stopped by the others at the last minute from eating the mushrooms. McBurney doesn't get suspicious, however, and eats the mushrooms. Shortly afterwards he falls to the ground and dies. While the others are sewing McBurney's body into a shroud, Miss Morrow looks on depressed.

The film ends with the women dragging the corpse on the way in front of the house to be taken away by the next soldiers who come by.

History of origin

At the end of March 2016 it was announced that Sofia Coppola was planning a film based on the 1966 novel A Painted Devil and the 1971 film The Beguiled , and Elle Fanning , Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst had signed for the main cast of the film. It was also announced that Coppola would act as a producer for the film together with her older brother Roman Coppola . In July 2016, it was also confirmed that Colin Farrell had joined the cast of the film as an additional lead actor. At the end of October 2016, Angourie Rice , Oona Laurence , Emma Howard and Addison Riecke were announced as further actors in the cast list. The French band Phoenix composed as in Coppola's Somewhere , the soundtrack to the seduced . In March 2017, Coppola said at the CinemaCon in Las Vegas that, although she was a fan of the Don Siegel film, she wanted to retell the story "from the perspective of women".

Shooting with a budget of 10 million US dollars began on October 31, 2016 on the "Madewood Plantation" near Napoleonville , Louisiana , where the exterior shots of the plantation house were filmed. The interiors were shot in Jennifer Coolidge's home in New Orleans . All of the shooting was completed on December 7, 2016.

Reviews

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de awards 3.5 out of 5 stars and draws the conclusion:

“Oscar winner Sofia Coppola replies to Don Siegel's macho film 'Deceived' with a radically reduced, exquisitely filmed remake that is pitch-black towards the end, in which this time everything comes from the women and the protagonist, who dominated everything in the original, shrunk to the role of a helpless wimp becomes. A strong, contemporary statement - and yet 'The Seduced' works primarily as a counterpart to the first film adaptation, because taken in isolation it lacks the necessary narrative trait, especially in the first half. "

Michael Kienzl from Critic.de notes that Coppola's version skips a lot of the original story or only reproduces it in a very abridged version and only suggests the conflict situations in the original film. He also sums up:

“You never get really angry with each other here - not even if the situation threatens to escalate. There is a not unshakable, but stubborn solidarity among the women, which in the end forms a rebellious act. But as cruel as it is, it all feels a bit like a harmless coffee party. What really interested the director about the material - besides giving it the typical Coppola touch - remains hidden. The biggest problem turns out to be that she repeatedly works against the dramaturgy of the story. She consistently avoids the big drama, but apart from an aesthetic concept and a few successful individual scenes, she has nothing to counter it. "

Lida Bach from Moviebreak.de awards 8 out of 10 points and draws the conclusion:

“The refined parable impresses with its brilliant theatrical performances as well as the ingenious arrangement of allegory and interaction. 'The Seduced' is a story of illusions: moral, emotional and psychological in nature. Above all, however, it is a pleasurable unmasking of rehearsed hypocrisy, both in front of others and in front of oneself. "

Hannah Pilarczyk from Spiegel Online praises the staging of the film with “sensitivity”, but sees a “great weakness” in Coppola's omission of the race and slave problems during the American civil war. She further sums up:

“Coppola stages the various dynamics among women with as much pleasure as he does with sensitivity. First the elegant stasis, then the erotic chaos and finally ... In contrast to Don Siegel's film 'Betrogen' (1971), to which 'Die Verführten' refers because he has the same book as the original, but Coppola did not understand their film as a remake wants, she does not use a simple escalation logic in 'Die Verführten', but discharges the erotic and power-strategic interwoven tensions on a completely different level. [...] In Thomas Cullinan's novel 'The Beguiled' from 1966, a slave had to take care of the household, and the figure of Edwina was designed as a mixed race. Five years later, Don Siegel reinterpreted Edwina as white in his film adaptation, but left slave Hattie (Mae Mercer) in his character ensemble. In 2017 only white women were left at Coppola. […] Coppola tries to tell a nice story anyway, in her film Miss Farnsworth's school is supposed to be the refuge of a noble society that never existed. To Coppola it may have seemed like a safe choice at first: With the boarding school, she has created a hyper-feminine, white space whose codes she knows how to tap into cinematic like no other female director. [...] Perhaps you have to see Coppola as the victim of seduction. She thought she had found a fabric that highlighted her greatest strengths. 'The Seduced' shows at least as much where her limits as a filmmaker lie. "

Björn Schneider from Spielfilm.de awards 4 out of 5 points and draws the conclusion:

"Visually intoxicating, sophisticated remake with surprising as well as (mostly) successful changes, which consistently turns the typical gender roles into the opposite."
