content

The film is set in Spain during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The king has those who stand up for the republic publicly executed as rebels. The people are upset, the mood is bad. In the wake of the irregulars , however, there are also pure bandits who, without specific political goals, simply take advantage of the unrest in the country and want to enrich themselves. José Rodriguez is one such bandit leader. Perhaps he once defended liberal ideals, but the advice of corrupted “colleagues” and greed for money have long made him a mere robber. He brings it to considerable income through tolls raised in Andalusia and raids.

When José's wife and child are killed by the monarch's mercenaries , he takes bloody revenge on them. The king finally offers him and his people peace and grace, but a little later, after he has accepted the peace, José is struck down as a traitor by a former friend.

criticism

The lexicon of international film comes to the conclusion that this second fictional film by the social and regime critical Spanish director Saura is stylistically still uncertain, but already contains undertones that have been removed by the Franco censorship.

The Protestant film observer comes to a similar assessment: The good thematic possibilities of the material were not used. There is such a difference in quality between the content of the film and its form, which is much better, that we cannot expressly recommend it.
