José Hernández (painter)

José Hernández (born January 5, 1944 in Tangier , Spanish Morocco , † November 20, 2013 in Málaga ) was a Spanish painter and sculptor .

Born in the Spanish protectorate of Morocco, he exhibited his first works in 1962 in the “Librairie des Colonnes” in Tangier. There, despite his youth, he was soon accepted in artistic circles, Emilio Sanz Soto comments: “On these ghostly visits in phantasmagoric surroundings I was accompanied by the very young painter José Hernández from Tangier, who was daydreaming at the age of 17 and had angry cats drew. ”His drawings show his tendency to depict dreams, certainly influenced by reading fantastic works.

At the age of twenty he went to Madrid , and from 1967 he also worked intensively on his graphic work . His engravings for the works of James Joyce and Artur Rimbaud , Federico García Lorca , Franz Kafka , Ernesto Sabato , Juan Rulfo , Luis Buñuel , José-Miguel Ullán , Juan de Jaúregui and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer are well known .

Since 1974 he has participated in numerous theater projects as a set and costume designer , for works by Michel de Ghelderode , Calderón de la Barca , Federico García Lorca, Antonio Buero Vallejo , Ramón María Valle-Inclán , Miguel de Cervantes , José Saramago , Francisco Nieva, Antonio Gala, Carlos Fernandez Shaw, Ignacio García May or José Zorrilla , and in operas by Manuel de Falla or Luis de Pablo.
