biography

Son of a famous tropical doctor and a bonsai specialist, Pablo Runyan grew up in a good middle-class family in Panama. In 1943 he moved to New York , where he met the writer Anaïs Nin . She became his art patron and soon introduced him to her friend Max Ernst , who recognized his talent as a painter and accepted him into his well-known art academy . In New York he met André Breton , Peggy Guggenheim , Max Ernst, Ava Gardner and Leonard Bernstein , who were to accompany him through his life. At that time still unsure whether he should devote himself to literature or painting , he decided without further ado for the merchant navy in order to travel the world in this way. During this time he wrote his first novel and then settled in Europe. Runyan lived in Paris and London and finally moved to Madrid in 1951 to return to painting. He also worked in film and theater as a co-author, actor and set designer with personalities such as Luis Buñuel and Carlos Saura . He worked in Robert Enrico's film Boulevard du rhum with Brigitte Bardot and Lino Ventura . In Carlos Saura's film Cordoba , he played the role of an English painter with Francisco Rabal . His personality and relationships made his apartment in Madrid a meeting point for film and painting figures during and after the dictatorship. Ava Gardner, Geraldine Chaplin , Octavio Paz , José Hernandez , Leonard Bernstein and Carlos Saura were much-seen guests. Since 1970 he has devoted himself exclusively to painting and exhibited his works in galleries such as Clan and Juana Mordo. He worked with artists such as Juan Prat in the Galerie Vandrés (1972), with Daniel Garbade and Jorge Arxe in ARCO 1984 in the Galerie Walcheturm, Zurich , or with Jaume Plensa , Eduardo Chillida and Antonio Saura in the Juan March Foundation (1998) .
