Francisco Rabal Valera (better known as Paco Rabal ), (born March 8, 1926 in Águilas , † August 29, 2001 in Bordeaux , according to other information on the return trip to Madrid ) was a Spanish actor .

Life

Rabal's family left the Murcia region after the Spanish Civil War broke out . In Madrid , the young Rabal had to work as a street vendor and thus secure the family's livelihood. After finishing school he worked as an electrician in Spanish film studios. He took on his first extras and then went to the theater, where he also received acting lessons. After numerous films in Spain, he achieved his international breakthrough in 1959 with the Mexican film Nazarín by Luis Buñuel . With Buñuel he turned two years later the film Viridiana , who at the 1961 Film Festival in Cannes , the Palme d'Or won. In addition to numerous cinematically interesting works, Rabal was also repeatedly seen in commercial products.

Rabal starred in over 200 films. He won numerous national and international film prizes, including in 1984, together with his compatriot Alfredo Landa , the actor's award at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival for Mario Camus ' social study The Holy Fools . However , he was only able to win the most important Spanish film award, Goya , once at the end of his career. Rabal was married to Asunción Balaguer . From this marriage comes his daughter Teresa , who is also an actress, and his son Benito , who works as a director.
