Cervantes - The King's Adventurer is a 1967 adventure film that was made in Spanish-French-Italian co-production. Director Vincent Sherman staged a biography of the Spanish national poet Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). The script is based on the novel Cervantes by Bruno Frank , published 1934th

action

In the 16th century, Pope Pius IV sends Cardinal Acquaviva and his assistant Miguel de Cervantes to the Spanish royal court in Madrid. The Pope hopes for support from King Philip II in the fight against the Moors. The king pledges help and promises to provide troops for the Holy League .

The young and enthusiastic Cervantes received the next assignment on his return to Rome . He is supposed to accompany the Arab envoy Hassam Bey. Despite their different cultures and views, a friendship develops between Cervantes and Hassam. When Cervantes learns that Hassam has been betrayed by Acquaviva during his negotiations, he resigns from his service. At the same time he met the courtesan Giulia and fell in love with her. Giulia, however, has to leave the city due to a decree of the Pope who wants to deport the prostitutes from Rome.

Cervantes joins his brother Rodrigo and takes part in the naval battle of Lepanto . He was wounded and was taken to the Messina hospital , where he met Giulia again. Cervantes, honored for his courage, travels to Rome after his recovery. The ship is boarded by Arab pirates and Cervantes and Rodrigo are brought to Algiers as prisoners . Cervantes is tortured, after which he is supposed to work in the mines with his brother.

When Hassam becomes governor of Algiers, Cervantes and Rodrigo are released. The two want to free the Christian slaves, but the uprising they instigated fails. The brothers are to be executed. Before the execution, they are unexpectedly ransomed and can return to Spain.

criticism

The Lexicon of International Films wrote: "Carefully staged and primarily interested in the depiction of the naval battle of Lepanto, the film largely lacks historical accuracy."

The film magazine Cinema called the film "unrealistic slaughter ham."

The Protestant film observer complains that the film contains a few too brutal scenes for under 16-year-olds, but sums up that it is a likeable, recommendable adventure film about the youth of the author of "Don Quixote".
