Michail Salkind , in Germany, France and after 1945 internationally: Michael Salkind , in Mexico: Miguel Salkind , born as Michail Jakowlewitsch Salkind (Cyrillic: Михаил Яковлевич Залкинд) (* February 22, 1889 in Kiev or Minsk , Russian Empire , today: Ukraine ; † January 10, 1974 in Paris , France ) was a Russian and Ukrainian-born film producer in international film.

Live and act

Salkind is considered one of the great unknowns of world cinema, only a few facts about his vita have survived. In the days of the Tsar, the son of the lawyer Jakow Salkind (1858–1932) began studying law at the law faculty of the university in his hometown of Kiev, which he also completed. Subsequently, he was temporarily director of the Kiev Opera . After the Bolshevik seizure of power, Salkind obviously ran into difficulties with the authorities. In 1921 he traveled to the West via Minsk with his heavily pregnant wife and was able to smuggle parts of the family jewelry out of the country during this escape. Hardly had he arrived on German soil when his son Alexander Salkind , who would later follow in Mikhail's footsteps and also produce films, was born in Danzig . Soon afterwards, however, Mikhail Salkind returned to the Soviet Union and took over the management of the Leningrad State Opera for six months . Then he decided to flee again and left the USSR, this time for good. The Salkind family settled in Berlin for the next few years.

Michail Salkind's activities in Germany are largely hidden in the dark; his production activities (together with Romain Pinès) on the classic film Die joyllose Gasse by GW Pabst only seem certain at the beginning of 1925 . Despite the enormous success of the critics, no other film productions by Salkind in Germany can be proven. In the autumn of 1932 he is said to have been involved in Pabst's film implementation of Don Quixote . When a Jew was forced to flee from Nazi Germany in 1933, the Salkind family settled in France. It was not until the late 1930s that Michail was able to find another job in film production there. When the Second World War broke out , the Salkinds left France and settled first in Cuba, then finally in Mexico. From 1943 onwards, Michail Salkind, who Hispanicized his first name in “Miguel”, was able to produce a wealth of films there. During this time Salkind also introduced his son Alexander to film production. At the beginning of the 1950s, Michail and Alexander Salkind returned to Europe. Michail was now living in Paris, but only appeared sporadically as a film producer, mostly in collaboration with Alexander. Together, both of them produced mainly large-scale, visually strong and equally prominent and international film productions such as Austerlitz - the shine of an imperial crown , The Trial , Cervantes - The King's Adventurer and The Four Musketeers - The Vengeance of My Lady .

further activities

In 1972 Salkind became the representative of the League for Human Rights on the Côte d'Azur.

Michail Salkind has also made a name for himself as an author of poems.
