action

A highly radioactive gas cloud of unknown cause is escaping from a state nuclear center, which, according to initial media reports, does not pose any health hazard to the population. BWC television reporter Dean Miller is commissioned by his boss to receive the scientists at the airport , who were irradiated and evacuated in this incident , in order to interview them.

The next day, an unidentified Hercules military plane lands at the airport, which immediately puts the authorities on alert and from which bloodthirsty, taciturn and burned passengers soon disembark. Miller and his cameraman witness how these creatures leave a horrific bloodbath on the airfield. They manage to make some recordings of the massacre before fleeing in dire straits towards the television station. There the stunned journalist tries to warn the population by means of a breaking news , but on instructions from General Murchison, he is prohibited from reporting in order to prevent a possible mass panic . A few moments later, the mutated attackers, whose number is constantly increasing, storm the transmitter and kill countless employees in an extremely brutal way.

Miller is able to escape the creatures again and visits his wife, the doctor Anna, at the local hospital in order to flee the "contaminated" city with her. Meanwhile, the military tries to take action and finds out that the red blood cells of the test subjects were destroyed by the radioactivity and that from now on they can only exist through the blood of the attacked living beings, so they depend on an external supply of the cells. These dangerous eccentrics, who infect their victims and turn them into bloodthirsty creatures, can only be effectively eliminated, in the opinion of a military doctor, by destroying their brains . In order to block the spread of the murderous corpses, according to the opinion of the expert, the "supply" of living people must be interrupted. The military shields the city as much as possible and tries to keep the monsters prisoner in this way within the city limits, but the plague gets out of control and spreads over the entire region.

Meanwhile, Dean reaches his panicked wife in the hospital, which is also being overrun by monsters, and escapes with her over several stations to an amusement park. There the couple is discovered just in time by Major Holmes' military helicopter and rescued by means of a rope ladder. During this rescue operation, the exhausted Anna Miller falls from the rope ladder and dies.

A few seconds later, the journalist wakes up bathed in sweat next to his sleeping wife and realizes that he was just having a bad nightmare. Relieved, he gets up and drives to the airport, where he wants to meet a renowned nuclear physicist. At the end of the film, he and a cameraman are waiting for the plane when it approaches and puts the authorities on alert.
