Mario Camus
Mario Camus García (born April 20, 1935 in Santander , Cantabria , † September 18, 2021 there ) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter .
biography
He dropped out of law school in 1956 to study film. He completed his film studies in 1963. His diploma thesis was the short film El Borracho. In the 1960s he wrote screenplays for the films The Street Boys and Cordoba , which were directed by Carlos Saura , and directed several short films himself.
His first feature films were the drama Los Farsantes and Young Sánchez about the life of a boxer. Both were created in 1963. Young Sánchez earned him his first awards, including a prize at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata . In the following years he did not stay true to any particular genre, but created both romantic comedies and musicals as well as literary adaptations. He received the Golden Bear at the 1983 Berlinale for The Beehive , a social drama based on the novel by Camilo José Cela starring Victoria Abril . He was also nominated four times for the Goya and for his film Los santos inocentes at the Cannes International Film Festival . He won the Goya for the screenplay for Sombras en una batalla (1993). Wild Dog Beach from 2002 is about a simple baker who goes in search of his brother, a terrorist who has gone into hiding.
Mario Camus, along with Carlos Saura, Basilio Martín Patino , José Luis Borau , Julio Diamante , Miguel Picazo and Manolo Summers , is counted among the pioneers of the “New Spanish Cinema” (Nuevo Cine Español) .
