Talk of Angels is an American drama from 1998 . Directed by Nick Hamm and written by Ann Guedes and Frank McGuinness based on the novel Mary Lavelle by Kate O'Brien and the poem Down by the Salley Gardens by William Butler Yeats .

In the 1930s, the Irish woman Mary Lavelle is being pressured into marrying an Irish politician. To escape the pressure, she travels to Spain . There she found a job as a teacher for a wealthy family.

Lavelle falls in love with the married Francisco Areavaga, who is an opponent of General Franco . The Spanish Civil War breaks out.

Reviews

Diane Selkirk wrote in the Apollo Movie Guide that Talk of Angels is a film about the growing up of a young woman who sought her way before the age of feminism . It is also a " sensitive and sweet " love story. The film is well played, with plenty of plot and " fascinating characters ".

Awards

Francisco Rabal won the Spanish Prize Premios Fotogramas de Plata in 2000 .

The film was shot in Spain . It was shown in two cinemas in the USA and grossed around 16,000 US dollars . In some countries like Argentina and Russia it was released directly on video and DVD.
