action

A man in rather worn clothes rings the doorbell at Anne Treibel's little house to bring her the papers of her late husband, with whom he was in the POW camp . On this occasion he told her that he no longer had any papers because he was accidentally pronounced dead years ago and is now struggling with the bureaucracy. Due to the suspected death, his wife remarries and with her new husband rebuilds the family print shop that had been destroyed. Anne Treibel is so moved by the story that she will make her husband's papers available to print engineer Martin Bergau for the near future. She also invites him to visit the next Sunday.

While Anne is saying goodbye to her new friend, an accident happens in front of her house. The young hairdresser Betti Krull is hit by a truck. The first helpers include the auto repair shop foreman Helga Schilling, the policewoman Irene Gabriel and Anne, who, with the help of the other women, brings the injured person into her house. A doctor called in wants to admit her to the hospital, which Betti does not want and is therefore allowed to stay in the house. The ladies get along so well that they arrange to meet for coffee the next Sunday. Martin also appears here, who makes a good impression on them, which Helga in particular did not expect. When he is allowed to try on and keep a suit from Anne's deceased husband, he is only adored. The four women become friends and will live in the house together for the near future. A room is also made available for Martin that he can use to relax.

When Martin Bergau is fired from the homeless shelter where he was previously housed, the women take him in and Anne registers him with the responsible authorities as her husband Erich Treibel. Over time, all four fall in love with him. One day he is asked by Helga to accompany her to a customer who lives far away. They go to eat in a restaurant and dance a little. Martin suffers a heart attack again, which can be traced back to a war injury. After their return he has a long conversation with Anne, during which they both admit their love.

Martin Berger is now firmly convinced that he will have an operation and has an appointment with a professor, a customer of Helga Schilling. Although the chances of success are only 1:10, he decides to have the procedure, only Anne is afraid. Martin only wants to have the operation carried out under his real name and gives up his identity as Erich Treibel, which leads to problems in the administration of the hospital. As a result, Martin's former and future wife also meet, but they can agree, since there is no problem for them. The quartet and the ex-wife wait together for the result of the operation. The only problem is that Martin relapses and has to survive a second operation, but it works.

Now nothing stands in the way of happiness. Helga Schilling also has a new goal, because she is going to Görlitz as a foreman , while Irene Gabriel has fallen in love with a photographer who published a series of photos about her in a magazine . Only the future of the hairdresser Betti Krull, who was seduced by a bon vivant, is still uncertain. But she too will find her way.

criticism

The New Germany said:

“Starting with the indispensable as well as miserably film-maltreated figure of the homecomer to the female quartet who barely bears chlorodontic teeth, if not crying and nobility flowing away; who strives for the grace of the noble, is almost everything in cinema utopia in the year nowhere at home noble kitsch, which at times, for example when the hairdresser seduced by the menjoubeard, takes on Marlittian forms and aroused embarrassing laughter in the audience (embarrassing for them Author!)."

The Lexicon of International Films writes that the film is noticeably constructed and talkative in dialogue. The weak film was unable to establish a timeliness.
