Walter Hugo Gross (born February 5, 1904 in Eberswalde ; † May 17, 1989 in Berlin ) was a German actor , cabaret artist and voice actor .

Life

The son of master tailor Gustav Gross and his wife Antonie completed an apprenticeship as a freight forwarder after graduating from high school. From 1923 he took lessons at the drama school of the German Theater Berlin . After his debut in 1926, he played mostly comic characters. He also took on supporting roles in films, where he was seen in over 150 productions from 1933 onwards.

Because of an ambiguous appearance in the Tingel-Tangel-Theater cabaret , he was imprisoned in the Esterwegen concentration camp from the end of May to the end of July 1935 and was then banned from working for several months.

After the war he continued his career in the Berlin radio cabaret Die Insulaner . Here he became known as a constantly ranting Jenosse Funzionary . In the entertainment films of West German cinemas, Gross was a popular permanent actor, good-natured and a bit clumsy, but then also rascally. On television he participated in several series, for example in the leading role of Paul Lehmann in Drüben bei Lehmanns , alongside Brigitte Mira , with whom he would also play in Drei Damen von Grill years later . He proved his qualities as a voice actor when he gave the cartoon character Piggy Dick the unmistakable squeaky voice in the German version - always with the same closing words "And always stay happy".

Gross, who continued to play the theater, was first married to the actress Lou Seitz and from 1950 to Ingeborg Strakosch. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1979 and the Gold Film Ribbon in 1988 for many years of outstanding work in German film.

After suffering a stroke in 1988, Gross died of heart failure on May 17, 1989 at the age of 85. His grave is in the Berlin Dahlem cemetery in field 9. His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .
