Regine is a German film drama from 1935 directed by Erich Waschneck . Based on Gottfried Keller 's novel of the same name , the story of the maid Regine, played by Luise Ullrich , is told, who is accused of infidelity. Adolf Wohlbrück plays the famous engineer who brings Regine into his world, and Olga Chekhova the woman who plays Regine badly.

In the opening credits of the film it is pointed out that the film was shot "according to Gottfried Keller's motifs", as it differs considerably from the original. From the basic structure, only the idea of what can happen when two people from completely different backgrounds enter into a connection has remained. Even the end of the film does not adhere to the literary model.

action

Frank Reynold had a career as an engineer and made a name for himself when he returned from America to his southern German homeland. When he met the housemaid Regine in the household of his uncle, Professor Gisevius, he fell in love with the young woman. Regine returns his affection and after a short time both marry. Frank's housekeeper, Mrs. von Steckler, is supposed to teach Regine missing manners and teach her how to move in higher society.

The beautiful actress Floris Bell, who was rejected by Frank, is annoyed that he preferred a simple maid to her. She devises a plan to discredit the unsuspecting young woman. She sees an opportunity to do so at a house ball that Frank cannot attend because he has an assignment in the Orient. Bell sees disapprovingly how Regine's naturalness delights the gentlemen present, and launches the rumor that Regine has gotten involved with Merlin, a man who is devoted to herself. She cleverly arranges for Merlin to bring Regine home and then notifies Ms. von Steckler, who surprises both of them when Merlin wants to kiss Regine. That night, Regine's brother Robert, who always pressured and tortured her, turned up at her house and asked for money. Out of a misunderstood solidarity, she helps him and does not reveal him to the police or to her husband later than it might be helpful for her. Ms. von Steckler informs Frank about the events and gives him her wrong view of things, so that he has to believe that his wife actually cheated on him.

Regine, who doesn't know how to defend herself and for whom Frank means her life, takes it all so much to heart that she sees only one way out. She wants to poison herself with gas. In the last second, so to speak, she is saved by Frank, who by now knows that he has done Regine an injustice.

Erich Waschneck directed the film Regine, based on Gottfried Keller's novella, as early as 1927 . A woman's tragedy . The maid Regine is played by Lee Parry , the American engineer Frank Thomas, as he is called in this film adaptation, by Harry Liedtke .

Another film adaptation was made in 1955, also called Regine . Directed by Harald Braun . Johanna Matz embodies the role of Regine. Erik Schumann plays a wealthy heir under the name Martin Lundt who marries Regine. The name Regine was retained in the film adaptations, most of the other names were changed.

In Keller's novella, the embassy attaché Erwin Altenauer, a rich and art-loving American of German origin, falls in love with the maid Regine. Regine takes her life out of shame about her brother's murder and her husband's suspicion that she was unfaithful to him. The inability of the spouses to have a clarifying conversation sets off this tragedy.

criticism

The lexicon of international film found "sentimental pre-war cinema ", but emphasized "but with considerable acting achievements".

Karlheinz Wendtland was of the opinion that Luise Ullrich had shown “her most mature performance to date” in this role. He wrote: “Her aura of innocence, her eyes, her body language convey a three-dimensional image of Regine. With this role she returns to the most elementary utterance. "Wendtland went on to say that" Adolf Wohlbrück [...] also admires the frugality of expression ". Wendtland commented on the portrayal of Olga Chekhova: “Olga Chekhova is a charming, but viciously intriguing parlor snake. Her virtuoso skills culminate in the chanson Love is just a game . "

At the time, the Film-Kurier wrote about Luise Ullrich: “You want to pick out highlights - and you can hardly find a scene that doesn't deserve to be mentioned. Whether she is now experiencing the miracle of love returned like an astonished child who cannot believe the magnitude of her happiness, whether she strides through the purgatory of a society that wants to mock its ignorance and yet the pure magic of this girl from the other The world cannot escape whether it romps around the house like a little wisp and despite all etiquette throws the uncomfortable shoes off its feet in a high arc or whether it finally goes to the gas tap - we experience them delighted and enthusiastic.
