action

Conny is a young, seemingly carefree girl at the age of 16. But she differs something from other teenagers of her age: Conny is already an orphan. The mother died giving birth, her father, once a rising pianist, died in an accident. Aunt Lotte, a hatter, has since lovingly looked after the girl and raised her. There is also a grandfather, and he is a well-known personality in classical music circles, because Franz Vidal is revered as an important conductor. However, the old man has no connection with young people, and accordingly he has hardly existed as Conny's grandpa. He only slips Aunt Lotte a sum of 300 DM a month so that the girl won't miss anything. The distance to his granddaughter primarily has something to do with a difficult father-son relationship: old Vidal has not forgiven his son for “wasting” his musical talent as a bar pianist, as he called it, instead of following in the footsteps of the old man and turning to classical music. Little Conny has to pay for that as the daughter of the headstrong son and is cut accordingly by the old man.

Franz Vidal is currently planning a concert tour to the USA, so he has to refrain from this, as he has severe memory problems. The star pianist therefore goes to his castle Niederried in the Black Forest to relax . The press got wind of this illness, and a resourceful reporter managed to find granddaughter Conny in a teenage music club in the hope of finding out more about her. But Conny doesn't know anymore either and therefore gives meaningless or at least evasive answers. The reporter then puts together his own story, which no longer has much in common with Conny's statements. A little later, Franzens secretary Bertram appears at Aunt Lotte's, who invites Conny to a vacation at Niederried Castle. Conny believes that the old man has become aware of his guilt for neglecting her, but Bertram acts on his own account, believing that he is doing something good for his mentally ailing boss. Because Franz Vidal has felt very lonely since the death of his son and does not know how long he will live himself. Vidal's stubbornness is obviously the reason not to approach Conny on his own. Conny is no less stubborn, as she has absolutely no desire for her grandfather in view of his behavior in recent years. After Aunt Lotte and Bertram have processed it accordingly, she agrees to travel to the castle.

The reception at Niederried Castle is very cold. The old Vidal, who knew nothing of the granddaughter's arrival, but read the alleged newspaper interview with Conny, in which his granddaughter allegedly accused him of never taking care of her deceased father, is accordingly angry. To make matters worse, Conny, like his own son, is not particularly interested in classical music, but is all the more interested in jazz, hits and rock'n'roll. Now Franz Vidal shows no longer any interest in his own granddaughter, who then immediately wants to break up the tents again. Before the train leaves for home, Conny uses the remaining time and enters the old man's music room. She discovers a record player and put on a record with a classical symphony that Franz Vidal once conducted. Captured by the sounds, Conny realizes that someone who is able to fill such music with life cannot be a person with a cold heart. Old Vidal has stepped into the room unnoticed and is enjoying the moment when he sees how much joy the granddaughter has in what means everything to him. Franz Vidal realizes that the 16-year-old girl is more important to him than he was ready to admit.

Conny and the grumpy star conductor come to terms, and the girl stays in Niederried for the time being. Soon the old man has to find out that this fresh blood, this youthfully undisguised teenager is really good for him and makes him blossom inside. It even gives him new energy to resume conducting. Franz Vidal decides to accept an offer for a concert as part of the Baden-Baden Music Festival Week. Conny is supposed to watch him conduct, but she does not appear on the day of the performance. Because Conny is still the happy teenager, and he is interested in other teenagers, especially those of the opposite sex. And so she befriends a young jazz musician named Rex, who enables her to make her first appearance as a pop singer in a forest café - just at the time when Franz Vidal is giving his concert. To make matters worse, a train connection to Baden-Baden was canceled, so that Conny couldn't make it to both appointments with the best of will. But the fact that Conny was singing a hit in the Waldcafé at the same time really displeases the old man. Again Vidal doesn't want to see his granddaughter anymore, but this time Vidal's factotum prevents Bertram from doing worse by reading the riot act to his master and intercepting Conny at the train station. Old Vidal has an understanding and shows up too. He knows that he wants to have Conny by his side from now on.
