action

The Duke of Novara-Liechtenstein Ferdinand is a tough young man who has to be fetched from a dive bar by his confidante Peter von Hazl after he has fought with a group of small crooks. His uncle Alexander, the Hereditary Duke of Novara-Liechtenstein, decides that Ferdinand should marry Princess Anna Silvana, not least in order to unite Novara-Liechtenstein with the neighboring country Este-Parma, to open the borders and thus to put an end to the smugglers' craft. Ferdinand and Peter flee the country overnight to avoid marriage. Anna Silvana, who would have refused to marry, travels to both of them with her friend Julia, wanting to see who is spurning them.

Peter loses his wallet with all the money and papers on the run . Neither of them can identify themselves in the hotel and are mistaken for impostors and thieves, but are kept there with free board and lodging for fear of a scandal. When Anna Silvana and Julia arrive, they only find out that a fake duke lives in the hotel. At the pirate ball in the evening, Anna Silvana and Ferdinand as well as Julia and Peter get closer without knowing each other's identity. Only when Anna Silvana is crowned Queen of the Ball, the identities are revealed. Since Anna Silvana feels duped, she now pretends to be a thief and, after consulting hotel guest Marina, steals the necklace that she presents to Peter and Ferdinand.

Meanwhile, Hereditary Duke Alexander has also arrived at the hotel and has brought five real crooks with him. They gradually steal the jewelry from the guests present and have also stolen Alexander's wallet and papers unnoticed. Alexander, who cannot identify himself, is now regarded as the head of Ferdinand and Peter's gang and treated accordingly. Ferdinand, who still knows the crooks from Novara-Liechtenstein, beats them up and locks them in the men's room. The house detective receives the stolen jewelry back and also Alexander's papers, which now reveal all true identities. Alexander in turn recognizes Anna Silvana and Julia as princess and baroness and so Julia and Peter as well as Anna Silvana and Ferdinand also come together.
