action

The year 1910: When Prince Georg, nephew of the Grand Duke of Baden-Werrach, realizes that an actress he promoted and loved was only taking advantage of him, he and his friend, the poet Dr. Richard Hebele, back to his castle in the Black Forest . On the way to Kaltenau, not far from the castle, he met the postman Barbara, who drives the Black Forest stagecoach. The coach is about to end and is to be replaced by an omnibus in line with progress . Georg, who introduced himself to Barbara as the prince's body hunter, promises to help her with the application to the Grand Duke, since he knows the prince well. He sends a letter to the Grand Duke; Barbara and the other postmen appear at the castle to thank them for a serenade, and Georg, who wants to keep his incognito, sends Richard out as a prince.

Georg and Barbara dance together at a party for the patron saint of the postmen, but Richard doesn’t miss the opportunity to appear as “Prince Georg”. A photographer secretly photographs him with the dancing twins Lilli and Cilli, whose father Kuno is a schnapps manufacturer and Richard promptly turns him into purveyor to the court . When the picture is about to get in the newspaper, the fraud is discovered and Richard is arrested. Georg has meanwhile been brought to his uncle, who is ill. He learns that his request for the stagecoach has been rejected by the minister responsible, who has been in charge of the Grand Duke's affairs since the Grand Duke fell ill. For his uncle, on the other hand, Georg is to carry out the inauguration of the new post bus that will take place the next day. At the ceremony, Barbara promptly hands over the grand ducal coat of arms, which previously hung on the stagecoach, to Georg. Then she runs away disappointed and takes the stagecoach back to Kaltenau. Georg hurries after her, catches up with her and drives with her to his castle. He wants to marry her and proposes to her. When we arrive at the castle, however, the flags are being hoisted to half-mast - the Grand Duke suddenly died and in his will he declared Georg his successor. Georg is desperate because he is not allowed to marry Barbara, but she lets him go. From the balcony of the castle he rigidly accepts the people's homage and Barbara mingles with the cheering crowd.

A little later, Georg, now Grand Duke, appears with his new grand ducal scribe Richard at the old post office. According to a grand ducal decree, Barbara is once again allowed to run the stagecoach, which is essential for the preservation of tradition in the region. Barbara and Georg spend the afternoon together and finally take the first tour with the new old stagecoach.
