action

The situation is tense in the small settlement of Bitters in wintry Wyoming . Farmer Hal Crane wants to fence in his land to protect it from the herds of cattle owned by rancher Blaise Starlett. The fact that Crane's wife, Helen, used to be with Blaise and still has feelings for him, makes the situation even more explosive. When Crane challenges Blaise to a duel with his men , a group of outlaws around the deserted captain of the Union army Jack Bruhn comes into town. After an attack on an army wage carriage, the criminals are on the run with the captured 40,000 dollars from the cavalry. Since Bruhn was shot and the ongoing snowstorm prevents him from continuing his journey, the local vet is supposed to help the leader. He removes the bullet from Bruhn and relieves the pain by numbing Bruhn with morphine. As a sign of his power, Bruhn has one of the men Cranes shot. He forbids those present to leave the settlement. When the rancher Clagett tries to get to his family anyway, he is shot by the gangsters. The gangsters Tex and Pace try to offend Helen, only the intervention of the captain prevents worse. When Blaise tries to get the four women present out of town to safety, this attempt is discovered and Blaise is beaten up by Bruhn's men.

Bruhn has young Bobby brought hostage to the grocer's shop, which his people use as their headquarters, in order to prevent those present from making another attempt to escape. When Ernine, Bobby's older sister tries to free her brother, Pace confronts her and threatens her. With the intervention of the youngest member of the gang, Gene, Ernine escapes. As the snowstorm continues and prevents the men from leaving, the gangsters spend the evening dancing with the four women in the settlement. With increasing alcohol consumption, the situation becomes more and more tense, only the captain and Gene, who has taken an interest in Ernine, have their feelings under control. Before it comes to a scandal, Blaise interrupts the bizarre event. He claims to know a way out of the city through the mountains. Since the drifting snow only takes place at the level of the settlement, the pursuers would advance faster than the bandits suspected. He offers to accompany the men through the mountains. As the bandits prepare for their departure the next morning, Gene says goodbye to Ernine. She tells him that there would be no way through the mountains. Gene warns Bruhn, who confronts Blaise in private. Blaise points out the severity of his injury to Bruhn, the doctor would not give him a chance of survival once the effects of the morphine wore off. As a dignified departure, the ride through the wintry mountains would be better than being slaughtered by the army and taking the innocent settlers with them to certain death. Bruhn agrees with the rancher and the group begins their arduous ride through the snow-blown mountains.

When Tex's horse collapses from exhaustion, Gene von Bruhn is forced to hand his horse over to Tex and stay behind. Shortly afterwards, Bruhn falls from his horse, weakened by his gunshot wound. When his henchman Shorty tries to help him, Pace shoots him. The four surviving crooks realize that the fewer people involved, the greater their share of the prey. So Tex and Pace kill the other two gang members. When Tex and Pace are busy lighting a fire for the night, Blaise tries to escape. Tex shoots Blaise's horse and prevents her from escaping, but her own horses then flee. The two bandits fail to ignite the fire due to the storm. Pace freezes to death in the icy night. Blaise manages to catch one of the horses that fled in the morning. Tex, weakened by the cold, can't stop Blaise and collapses from exhaustion. Blaise manages to ride home, where he meets Gene, who also made it to the settlement. Gene is employed by Blaise on his ranch.
