action

The film is set in Texas in the second half of the 19th century . Matt Denbow owns a ranch with approximately 100,000 acres of land. The property is secured with a strong barbed wire fence. A group of settlers would have to cross Denbow's pastures to get to the area assigned to them by the government. Matt Denbow, however, rejects the settlers' request.

Two girls have cast an eye on Glenn Denbow, the son of the landowner: Lola and Jane. Charlie Fentress is also targeting the latter, who is currently taking her out to dance. Glenn tries his luck with Lola first. However, when this lets him down, he unceremoniously unwinds Charlie Jane. When Jane and Glenn leave the bar, Charlie is incited against his rival by Lola. He follows the two and challenges Glenn to fight. This ends fatally for Charlie. After no weapon was found on the dead man, Glenn's assertion that he acted in self-defense is of no use. He will be arrested. His cousin Kirk and the family lawyer manage to have Glenn released on bail ; but they cannot prevent the prosecution. So the family thinks about how to get rid of Jane as a key witness . After a failed attempt at bribery, Glenn falls into the idea of marrying the girl because she is not allowed to testify against him as his wife. Jane is happy about Glenn's declarations of love and is only too happy to be married to him. But it doesn't take long before she realizes what kind of game she was playing with. So she locks her door in front of Glenn. Then he looks for his luck with Lola again. He learns from her that she took the pistol from Charlie before sending him after Glenn and Jane.

Matt Denbow, the head of the family, initially did not appreciate his daughter-in-law. But when she saves the life of one of his best people, the Mexican Bandera, his contempt turns into admiration.

In the meantime, Lola and Glenn's right-hand man, Dave Chittun, hatched a plan to steal some of Denbow's cattle and sell them in Mexico. Glenn is forced by them to participate in the action, especially since Lola has him in hand because of the revolver. Soon afterwards, the trio and a few boys are driving a herd towards the border. Kirk found them out and followed them with some loyal followers. When Chittun loses his horse, the latter shoots Glenn down in order to be able to flee with his horse. But a bullet hits him too.

The trek of the settlers makes a new attempt to pass Denbow's estate. But he remains stubborn. As soon as the leader of the settlers has swung the ax on a fence post, Matt puts the gun on him. However, someone else precedes him, resulting in Matt's death.

Kirk and Jane open the passage to the settlers.

criticism

“A wild west who strives for originality and cleanliness. Friends of such stories can see him with excitement from the age of 16. "

"Thanks to the cast just above the average of the genre."

"Like his few other B-Westerns," The Day of Retribution "is a very ambitious work by Hugo Fregonese. Largely overlooked by the criticism, this is clearly the "little brother" of the famous Western Duel in the Sun by King Vidor . "
