John Alexander (born November 29, 1897 in Newport , Kentucky , † July 13, 1982 in New York City ) was an American actor.

Life

John Alexanders made his first acting appearance in 1902 when he was only four years old in the play The King's Children . In the following decades he worked primarily as a stage actor before he came to film in middle age. He was best known for Frank Capra's classic comedy Arsen und Lace Cap , where he plays the mentally confused Teddy Brewster for the US President Theodore Roosevelt and also adopts his habits. Alexander had previously played the role of Teddy Brewster with great success on Broadway . In 1950, in the film The Count of Mexico , he played the "real" Theodore Roosevelt alongside Bob Hope . While Alexander otherwise only appeared in a few films, he was active on Broadway for decades. Alexander was also seen on television from the 1950s, most recently in 1962 in the television series Car 54, Where Are You . John Alexander died in 1982 at the age of 84 while attending an acting convention in New York.
