action

Former Texas ranger and gunslinger Logan has renounced his former life and leads a peaceful farmer life with wife Susan and their son Sammy. Money worries drive him into town, where he borrows $ 500 from an old friend, the saloon owner Goldie. When he tries to pay off loan debts, he catches a gang of bank robbers in the act. While trying to flee the city wildly by shooting, the outlaws are shot dead by Logan, the sheriff and other armed city dwellers. However, the head of the gang manages to flee with the prey because Logan recognizes him and does not pull the trigger at the crucial moment. It's his former fellow ranger and friend, Sam Ward. When Sam got on the wrong track years ago and had to go to jail for many years, Logan took care of his wife and their just-born son, from which love grew. Susan divorced Sam and married Logan.

While the townspeople prepare to pursue Sam, Sam rides to Logan's farm and has a slightly injured arm bandaged by the surprised Susan. Sam tells her that he broke out and that she is looking after her intermittent infidelity, but now expects her to return to him. When he notices Susan's shocked refusal, he initially seems to want to make her compliant by force, but then lets go of her and leaves the house with the bitter announcement that Logan will be shot. He rides to a trapper's hut, where the light girl Lotti is waiting for the gang to return home. She doesn't care that her lover was killed in the shooting and she throws herself at Sam, who likes to put up with it. Before the two of them can set off for Mexico with the booty, they are caught by Logan and a group of townspeople who guessed Sam's hiding place correctly.

The men in question, including two wicked thugs, a bartender and a buffalo hunter, turn out to be completely unscrupulous and suggest that Sam and the girl be shot and the money divided instead of returned to the bank. But Logan opposes them, even though he knows that Sam wants to kill him. He wants to give him a fair trial. When the situation threatens to escalate, the group is startled by a scouting party of Apaches. The attempt to escape undetected, as well as Sam's attempt to get rid of his chains and escape with the help of Lotti, fails, and now the group becomes a community of fate that defends itself in a narrow ravine against waves of attacks by the Indians with the first victim being Lotti, who is hit by a sniper. Although Sam leaves no doubt that he continues to pursue the life of his old friend Logan, Logan gives him a gun as any good marksman is needed. When the Apaches are finally overcome, the murderous game starts again, and now Logan and Sam fight side by side against the greedy companions. When the two have shot all but the brutal Diggs, who fled, Logan rides the seriously injured Sam to his farm to treat him there.

The severely weakened Sam sees his son for the first time, and his peaceful and kindhearted manner makes him bitterly regret his plans for revenge. He realizes that Logan is a good father to his son, and they both now agree that he is and always will be their son. Suddenly Diggs appears, who has been secretly following the two, and points his Colt at Logan. With the last of his strength, Sam throws himself into the shot and intercepts the bullet, whereupon Logan takes Diggs down. Sam dies in Logan's arms.
