Daddy Cool (also with the addition My Father the Hero ) is an American comedy film directed by Steve Miner from 1994. It is an English-language remake of the French film My Father, the Hero (original title: Mon père, ce héros ), the filmed three years earlier. The main roles of the naive father and the pubescent daughter are played by Gérard Depardieu and Katherine Heigl .
action
The French André is going on vacation to the Bahamas with his 14-year-old daughter Nicole . He split from Nicole's mother, Megan, a few years ago, who lives in New York City while he is resident in Paris . Therefore, he rarely gets to see his daughter. Amazed by the change that Nicole has undergone since their last meeting, Nicole explains to him about her strict privacy and similar pubertal clichés . As a result, the two often clash, which leads to one or the other amusing situation.
On her first day in the resort, Nicole met the attractive Ben, who lived with his parents in a luxurious house on the beach and worked in the hotel where Nicole and her father stayed. When he asks her age, she deceives him to be 18 (later 16) years old. Since she does not want to admit that she is on vacation with her father, she makes up a story of lies and tells that André is her older lover and that he once took her off the street. Without André's knowledge, this news spread quickly in the hotel; the other guests then avoid André and call him a " child molester " behind his back . At the side of the somewhat naive André soon joins the attractive Diana, who is the only one who knows the true relationship between him and Nicole and gives him various tips regarding the problem with his daughter. André also worries about his relationship with the French woman Isabelle, who seems to be turning away from him.
Ben and Nicole get along better and better, but slowly Nicole's story takes over. She tells so curious things about her father and alleged confidante, who fought in the Hundred Years War and suffered a terrible war wound in the process, that she has to tell him about him soon. After some initial anger, André decides to help his daughter by playing the game for a while longer so that his daughter has enough time to pour pure wine for Ben. But it doesn't come to that. The wrong image Ben has of André causes him to play André more and more badly and finally to urge him to leave his "beloved" alone and rather leave her to his own care, because he loves her. André is touched by the goodwill of the 17-year-old and considers him a good friend for his daughter.
However, through a slip of the tongue by Nicole, Ben soon learns the truth. He feels deeply hurt and wants to break off contact with Nicole just before she has to go home. Finally, André manages to find a better relationship with his daughter. Together they find a way to apologize to Ben so that he and Nicole can finally find each other. André suddenly knows how to treat Isabelle too and decides to marry her.
background
Gérard Depardieu played the leading role in the original film Mein Vater der Held (1991) . According to the translation of the French title, the remake was called My Father the Hero , actually translated as Mein Vater der Held in German. However, since this was already the German distribution title of the film from 1991, a significant "Daddy Cool" was added to the younger film in the German title. This idea found favor with the American manufacturers, so that only Daddy Cool can be read in the opening credits of the film . Nevertheless, the film is actually called My Father the Hero and in German Daddy Cool - Mein Vater der Held , so that the title to be read in the film does not correspond to a distribution title.
Reviews
“The staging and the book partly follow the template right down to dialog sentences and camera angles, but the psychological nuances have largely disappeared in the effort to create punch lines and gags,” said the lexicon of international films . Cinema simply meant: "Amusing remake".
The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
