My father the hero (original title: Mon père, ce héros ) is a French comedy film by Gérard Lauzier from 1991. The main roles are played by Gérard Depardieu and Marie Gillain .

action

The businessman André Arnel is flying to Mauritius with his 14-year-old daughter Véro on vacation . He separated from Vero's mother a few years ago. Because of the amount of work he does, he rarely gets to see Véro. Surprised by the change that Véro has gone through since their last meeting, she explains to him about her strict privacy and similar pubertal clichés . As a result, the two often clash, which leads to one or the other amusing situation.

On her first day in the holiday resort, Véro met the attractive Benjamin, who lived with his parents in a luxurious house on the beach and ran a water ski rental that Véro and her father used. When he asks her age, she deceives him to be 18 (later she tells him she is 14) years old. Since she does not want to admit that she is on vacation with her father, she makes up a story of lies and tells that André is her older lover and that he once took her off the street. Without André's knowledge, this news spread quickly in the hotel; the other guests then avoid André and call him a " child molester " behind his back .

At the side of the somewhat naive André soon joins the attractive but lonely Christelle, who is the only one who knows the true relationship between him and Véro and gives him various tips regarding the problem with his daughter. Despite an argument, the two remain friends. André also worries about his relationship with the French woman Isabelle, who seems to be turning away from him.

Benjamin and Véro get along better and better, but slowly Véro's story takes over. She tells such curious and absurd stories about her father and alleged confidante, who fought in the Hundred Years' War and suffered a terrible war wound in the process, that she soon has to tell him about it. After some initial anger, André decides to help his daughter by playing the game for a while longer so that his daughter has enough time to pour pure wine for Ben. But it doesn't come to that. The wrong image Benjamin has of André causes him to play André more and more badly and finally to urge him to leave his "beloved" alone and to leave her in his own care, because he loves her. André is touched by the goodwill of the 17-year-old and considers him a good friend for his daughter.

When her father almost drowns in the sea, Véro can only shout “Papa, Papa”, and Benjamin finally learns the truth. He feels deeply hurt by her deception and wants to break off contact with Véro just before she has to go home again. Finally, André manages to find a better relationship with his daughter. Together they find a way to apologize to Benjamin so that he and Véro can find each other again on New Year's Eve. André suddenly knows how to treat Isabelle too and decides to marry her.

Remake

Three years later, an English-language remake was released under the title Daddy Cool . Gérard Depardieu played the leading role again, the role of his film daughter Nicole was played by Katherine Heigl .

criticism

For the lexicon of international films , Mein Vater der Held was a "comedy that, despite the revival of various clichés, describes the difficulties of growing up and personal development psychologically just as precisely as the fatherly detachment from the beloved child". The film is also credible "through the freshness and naturalness of the actors".

The verdict of Cinema was: “Charming and funny game of confusion with a wonderfully pot-bellied Depardieu.” The internet portal kino.de called the film a “refreshingly snappy and feather-light staged comedy full of excellent situational comedy and well-spiced dialogues”. Gérard Lauzier, a "comic artist who is very popular in his home country and who exposes sociocultural clichés", was the right choice as a director "to give this story about the growing up of a cheeky little fruit the necessary pep".
