A summer in the country (original title: Les Enfants du marais ) is a feature film by the French director Jean Becker from 1999. It is based on the novel Les Enfants du marais by Georges Montforez. The outdoor shots took place in the Rhône-Alpes region in the towns of Colomieu, Montmerle-sur-Saône , Trévoux and Cerdon (Ain) .
action
The story takes place in the Marais marshland in 1919 and tells of the daughter of the drunkard Riton, who, like the other inhabitants of the marshes, lives in a small hut with his family. He is good friends with his neighbor Garris. He actually wants to keep moving, but worries about Riton and his family make him linger.
The events of any summer are told. The two friends fight their way through life free of birds and unbound. They sing the people into May, sell frogs and snails in the market and help out with gardening. Life is not easy, but it is pleasant.
Together with friend Amédée they get to know the (poor) rich Monsieur Richard, who himself comes from the swamps and mourns his freedom under the knack of his daughter. Riton forgets a resentful boxing champion and Garris falls miserably in love.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films called Ein Sommer auf dem Lande “a hymn to friendship and the little joys of life, carried by restrained tension and gentle humor, which evokes a bygone era in picturesque images and through the precise and loving Figure drawing lets you experience a fascinating 'summer in the country' ”.
The TV magazine Prisma praised the “brilliant pictures” with which the director “portrays two lovely bon vivants who do not surrender even in difficult times”. In addition to “a brilliant photograph”, the film is also “[d] ank sympathetic actors [...] a pleasant pleasure that offers a pleasant change from the American commercial monotony”.
According to Bavarian television, “Becker praises the beauty of the simple life, formulates a tender ode to the freedom and dignity of the little man”. One cannot blame the film for “the look through rose-colored glasses ”. The actors are also outstanding: "The brilliant cast - Jacques Gamblin as a mysterious loner, Jacques Villeret as the likable swallowing woodpecker, Michel Serrault as the poor rich man - and a seductive camera complete the film experience."
