Hans Ulrich Humpert (born October 9, 1940 in Paderborn ; † August 29, 2010 in Cologne ) was a German composer and radio play maker.

Life

Humpert, son of Hans Humpert (1901–1943), is one of the pioneers of electronic music alongside Karlheinz Stockhausen . From 1961 to 1967 he studied electronic music with Herbert Eimert and drums with Christoph Caskel at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne ; German studies and history at the same time at the University of Cologne . From 1969 to 1972 he founded Group 8 Cologne together with others . From 1968 to 1972 he was Eimert's assistant, from whom he took over the studio for electronic music at the Cologne University of Music in 1972 , which he directed until 2007 and where he taught until 2009. The tradition of “Cologne” electronic music that began in the electronic music studio of Westdeutscher Rundfunk was continued by Humpert and brought up to date with the latest technology.

His lexicon of electronic music is a standard work of contemporary art music and electronic avant-garde. As early as the 1960s, he produced didactic records that explained basic terms and demonstrated the studio technology of that time with its musical possibilities, a concept that he continued with a large number of radio broadcasts on electronic music topics for the WDR . His last radio play about Heinrich Heine remained unfinished.

Humpert died in 2010 at the age of 69. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hall 41).
