Carles Santos Ventura (born July 1, 1940 in Vinaròs in the Valencia region ; † December 4, 2017 there ) was a Spanish composer and artist .

Life

Carles Santos began his training at the renowned Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona and continued his studies in Paris . In 1961 he began his career as a pianist. His repertoire included works by Bartók , Schönberg and Webern . A grant from the March Foundation brought him to the United States in 1968, where he met many avant-garde artists such as John Cage . In the late 1960s he also began to turn to film. A series of shorts, documentaries and feature-length films followed.

In the 1970s he decided to only play his own compositions. He has appeared at the Festival d'Automne in Paris, the Wintermusic '82 in Karlsruhe , the Fundaçao Gulbenkian in Lisbon , the Musicalia in Milan, the Moers Festival , the Music Theater Festival in London and the Bienal San Juan de Puerto Rico , at the Zürcher Theater Spektakel in Zurich and at New Music America '83 in Washington, DC

In the 1980s he began to design and implement scenic and musical shows, which he a. a. at the Sydney Opera House , the Hebbel-Theater Berlin , the Edinburgh Festival and the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona.

He also took on various commissioned work. He became known to a larger audience at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . He composed part of the music for the opening ceremony, which he conducted, and the official Olympic fanfare . He also composed for the 2001 Art Biennale in Valencia .

In addition to his musical and cinematic work, he also distinguished himself as a visual artist and writer .

He died of cancer at the age of 77.

style

Santos' music was marked by a decidedly minimalism. His musical language was shaped by Romanticism and traditional Spanish music as well as by atonal and twelve-tone music .
