The installation bit.fall on the Grote Markt in the Dutch city of Groningen (2014)

Julius Popp trained as a photographer from 1995 to 1996 . From 1998 to 2005 he studied fine arts at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig , from 2005 to 2009 he was a master student of Astrid Klein . Popp is not included in the New Leipzig School .

He deals with various artistic disciplines, in particular with objects , installations , environments and computer simulations , and in his works he breaks the boundary between art and information technology . One example is his work bit.fall from 2005, in which a machine selects keywords from the Internet and represents them by falling water droplets. Each word is only visible for a fraction of a second, so that an “information waterfall” ( bit .fall ) arises from them .

Popp received numerous awards, including the Robot Choice Award (2003) and the Art Prize of the Leipziger Volkszeitung (2009). In addition to the art world, his works also received attention in scientific circles as contributions to artificial intelligence , such as the Fraunhofer Institute in Bonn and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (USA).

Julius Popp lives in Leipzig and New York .

Quote

“The focus of my work, which lies between science and art, is the investigation of the interactions of complex systems. This is done with the help of autonomous machines that I constructed according to logical rules. "
