The Stenungsunds If is a Swedish football club in Stenungsund in the west of the country. The club played in Sweden's second division for several years.

history

Stenungsunds IF was founded on April 27, 1927. The football team took part in a regional league operation for the first time in the following year, before it was incorporated into the lower division of the Swedish league pyramid. In 1974 the club finally rose to the third division for the first time and was able to hold the class for two years. First she played in the fourth division in the middle division, before returning to the third level as a season winner in 1980.

Stenungsunds IF narrowly missed the direct march into the second division in the 1981 season. As third in the table behind IK Oddevold and Alingsås IF , two points were missing for promotion. The team could not confirm the success and slipped into the relegation battle. In 1982, 18 points were enough to keep the league, but the club was relegated the following year. This time the team managed to get promoted again, but in the third division they missed relegation again and in 1985 even fell victim to a league reform. Classified as a fifth division, the team returned to the fourth division after just one season, where they became a fixture in the following years.

In 1993 Stenungsunds IF rose again to the third division after the team moved into the promotion round in the autumn series behind Ljungskile SK as second in the table and remained there without defeat. The newly promoted surprised and also finished in Division 2 Västra Götaland as second behind the promoted team. After successes over Väsby IK and Myresjö IF , the team reached the second division for the first time. In the southern season, the club settled in midfield. With a ninth place in the first year, the club had four points ahead of the relegation places occupied by Jonsereds IF , Karlskrona AIF , IK Sleipner and Lunds BK . After a tenth place in the following year, the club achieved the best result in the club's history in 1996. Behind IF Elfsborg and Ljungskile SK, the team occupied third place in the table, three points behind the relegation place to Allsvenskan . After each fifth place in the two subsequent seasons, the crash followed in 1999. As the bottom of the table, the club clearly missed the qualification for the newly created Superettan and was passed through to fifth division in the following two seasons.

After Stenungsunds IF moved into the promotion games in the first year in the fifth level as second in the regular season and failed there, the team returned in 2003 as the season winner in the fourth division. In the relegation, she missed relegation there and slipped into sixth division due to a league reform in the following season. The immediate resurgence was followed by another descent in 2008.
