Stenungsund is a place ( tätort ) urbanized in the Swedish province of County of Västra Götaland and the historical province of Bohuslän . It is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

The place is 47 km north of Gothenburg and 43 km south of Uddevalla . From here there are permanent connections to the offshore islands of Orust and Tjörn .

history

Stenungsund began as a berth for ships and developed into a seaside resort in the Gothenburg region in the 19th century. A stronger development spurt began in the 1940s when a steam power plant and a petrochemical plant were established. In the 1960s, the population of Stenungsund tripled and was thus higher than the population of nearby towns such as Lysekil and Strömstad .

economy

Petrochemicals

Today, Stenungsund is one of the most important Swedish centers for the production of plastics and their preliminary stages. An oil-fired thermal power station, which is located in a cavity that was previously blown into the mountain, served as the basis for the chemical plants. The four chimneys of the thermal power station shape the silhouette of the place today.

Other industries

The place is a much visited tourist center in summer and also a trading center for the southern Bohuslän .
