Lysekil is a city in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Bohuslän . The main town of the municipality of the same name is located about 30 km west of Uddevalla on the Gullmarsfjord.
history
Lysekil was first mentioned in documents around 1570. At that time it was a fishing village that experienced a boom in the 18th century. In 1836 it became a market and in 1903 a town. In 1847 a health resort was opened and the city developed into a popular seaside resort. At the same time industrialization began in the food industry (canning factories) and at the end of the 19th century the Skandiawerke (ship engines) were built. Despite the industrialization, Lysekil is an important tourist destination on the Swedish west coast.
Cityscape
The oldest part of the city (Gamlestaden) is located on the northern harbor and mainly dates from the 19th century, although there is evidence of a settlement from the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century, a new city center was built on the southern harbor near the bathing complex with buildings in the national romantic style and in Art Nouveau.
Today there is the Bohus Museum and the House of the Sea (Havets hus), a marine aquarium with 109 species of fish. Lysekil is also the center of Swedish marine research.
