The place Fiskebäckskil is located on the island of Skaftö (also called Skaftölandet ) in the municipality of Lysekil in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län or the historic province of Bohuslän .
geography
The place is in the north of the island of Skaftö, about 100 km by road north of Gothenburg . The old fishing settlement is separated from the east side (Östersidan) by a deep watercourse. To the west, the place and the island border on the Gullmarsfjorden (also Gullmarn ), Sweden's only fjord . Opposite the place, on the western bank of the fjord, is Lysekil , the main town of the municipality. Both places are connected by a ferry connection .
history
Fiskebäckskil has always been a fishing community, but in its heyday in the 19th century, cargo shipping transformed Fiskebäckskil into one of the largest and most important port communities in Bohuslän. In 1863 58 ships had their home port here .
Tourism
The most famous resident was probably the painter Carl Wilhelmson . A gallery is dedicated to him. The painter was buried in the wooden church.
The miller Per Olsson built a Dutch windmill from 1854 to 1855 . In 1913 the mill was sold to the non-profit association Sjöstjärnan (Starfish), which has since taken over the management and maintenance of the mill as a cultural heritage.
Fiskebäckskil wooden church, whose special features are the roof and wall paintings, was built in the years 1771–1772 and replaced an earlier wooden church from the 1500s. The pulpit was made in Gothenburg in 1792 and was originally intended to decorate Gothenburg Cathedral . In 1794 it was installed in the church of Fiskebäckskil.
