Orust is an island off the west coast of Sweden in the province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Bohuslän . It is located north of the provincial capital Gothenburg . After Gotland and Öland , it is the third largest island in Sweden with an area of 345.5 km². Together with some of the surrounding islands, it forms the 388 km² municipality of Orust .
The island is connected to the mainland at Sundsandvik (near Uddevalla ) and to Tjörn via other bridges .
The island and the neighboring island of Tjörn are characterized by a concentration of prehistoric monuments, including numerous polygonal towers such as those at Brattås and Haga , passage graves in Brattås and Skanstorp and other dolmens . Also, rune stones , standing stones , rock carvings and long beds are to be found there.
