Tjörn is an island off the west coast of Sweden in the historic Bohuslän and Västra Götalands län . It is the sixth largest island in Sweden with its 167.3 km². Approx. 14,953 inhabitants live on Tjörn (as of March 31, 2011), which corresponds to 89 inhabitants per km². The island of Tjörn belongs to the municipality of the same name .
geography
The Tjörnbron leads from the east side of the island to Stenungsund and connects Tjörn with the mainland. The largest town on the island is called Skärhamn and is also the headquarters of the municipality. Can be reached via the Skåpesundbron from the neighboring island of Orust in the north of the island. Other places on Tjörn are Rönnäng , Klädesholmen and Kyrkesund .
The industry was shaped by fishing and boat building for many decades. The biggest employers on Tjörn are still the shipping company TransAtlantic (formerly B&N) and the shipyards Djupviks varv and Rönnängs varv.
tourism
During the summer months, the number of tourists in Tjörns increases to around 30,000. Skärhamn has a guest harbor where many travelers dock on to explore the Swedish west coast. In addition, the Nordic Watercolor Museum (Akvarellmuseet) has been located in Skärhamn since 2000.
The " Tjörn runt " regatta takes place in the third week of August - with around 1300 participating private boats, it is one of the largest sailing regattas in the world, which runs 28 nautical miles around the island and attracts many onlookers every year.
On the first weekend in September, the Tjörn Triathlon 11.3 takes place - a competition over half the Ironman distance, which is also the Swedish championship over this route.
Attractions
Popular excursion destinations are the neighboring islands of Härön and Åstol as well as the 8,000 year old grave field in Hällene, near which the earliest evidence of runic writing can be found. The Styrdalen dolmen is also located on the island of Tjörn (no. RAÄ Valla 15: 1). This is west of Valla and north of Vallhamn and Habborsby.
