The fishing village of Kyrkesund is located in the north-west of the island of Tjörn on the west coast of Sweden , opposite the offshore island of Härön to the west, about ten kilometers north of Skärhamn . It belongs to the municipality of Tjörn in the province of Västra Götalands län and is located in the historic province (landskap) Bohuslän .
Before 2015, Kyrkesund had the status of a Småort , but since then has formed the significantly larger crime scene Kyrkesund och Bö, which now comprises a practically continuously built-up area in the north-western part of the island of Tjörn, together with formerly partly independent Småorts such as Bö (i Klövedal), Gullfjäll, Långekärr and Sunna as well as various holiday home areas.
To this day, Kyrkesund has received its typical fishing village, mainly from the turn of the 20th century. It is a popular lookout point during the Tjörn runt regatta .
history
The late medieval settlement of Sumpen near Kyrkesund is one of the oldest in Bohuslän. The stone setting of Sankt Olofs valar, a well-known sea mark, is on a hill above the village . According to legend, the passage between Tjörn and Härön near Kyrkesund, which is sometimes only about 50 meters wide, was broken by Saint Olav ( St. Olof in Swedish ) during a sailing competition with his half-brother Harald . During the race, Olav would have met some nasty trolls whom he turned into stone sea marks.
During the bohuslän herring season in the 18th century, Kyrkesund's economic life flourished. On the offshore island of Kålhuvudet , a potion factory was built around 1780. A memorial stone on the southern tip commemorates the founder JF Pettersson. The buildings are family-owned and are still almost unchanged today.
The artist Karl Nordström (1855–1923) was born in Kyrkesund.
