Nordström was the son of Anders Nordström and his wife Britt-Louise (née Hellberg). From 1875 he was mainly supervised by Edvard Perséus as a student at the drawing school at the Swedish Art Academy . From 1880 to 1882 he stayed for studies in various places in France , where he was strongly influenced by Impressionism . Among other things, he lived with other Swedish artists in the artists' colony Grez-sur-Loing . Nordström had his first notable successes in 1886 at the Paris Salon with his paintings Waldstück bei Grez and an open-air portrait of Mrs. N. as a fiancée . In the same year, Nordström married the artist Tekla Lindeström and his daughter Elsa also later became a painter. After that, Nordström lived mainly on Tjörn and in the Stockholm district of Djurgården, whereupon his style tended more towards Scandinavian. Nordström was one of the founders of the Swedish Artists Association and was its spokesman from 1896 to 1920.

Together with Nils Kreuger and Richard Bergh , he formed the so-called Varberg School, which was based on the works of Paul Gauguin . Nordström was close friends with August Strindberg and Carl Larsson , whom he had met in France. His pictures are exhibited in the Swedish National Museum , on Waldemarsudde , in the Thielska Gallery and in the Gothenburg Art Museum.
